Born in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, landlocked by Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Ivory Coast, in West Africa, steeped in the culture of the sound systems of the capital Ouagadougou, Baba Commandant plays the six-stringed donso ngoni, or “the hunter`s harp”, an instrument that the slave trade transformed into the North American banjo. The strongest modern Afro set that I`ve heard in a long while, “Juguya” bears obvious comparison to another great ngoni exponent, Bassekou Kouyaté, and the Tishoumaren of Malians Tinariwen, but also mixes Fela & Tony`s call-and-response Afrobeat manifestos with Konono #1`s electric sanza distortion, and Ndagga`s griots. “Wasso” falls into Dub. “Siguisso” is the Ju Ju music of King Sunny Ade`s “Ja Funmi”. “Folon” is for all those who might have forgotten that the Blues came from Africa.
