Postcards From Africa #2: Ethiopian Fusion

Words by Andy M

Three Ethiopian tracks from the last few years joining the dots between past and present, crossing continents and blending styles. First up, Samuel Yirga’s 2012 version of I Am the Black Gold of the Sun with Nicolette. Samuel used to be in Dub Colossus and is the most amazing keyboard player. I saw him live in a tiny bar in Addis a couple of years ago really cutting loose playing a wonderful mix of jazz and funk in true Herbie Hancock style. He’s currently to be found entertaining diners on a Saturday night in one of Addis’ great Italian restaurants. My kind of piano man…His album from a few years back on Real World is well worth checking if you missed it.

Samuel Yirga – Black Gold of the Sun with Nicolette and the Creole Choir of Cuba.

Second up, Prins Thomas turns Hailu Mergia into a Balearic sunset monster. Awesome Tapes From Africa score again.

Thirdly, Mikael Seifu brings us right up to date whilst taking us right back. Skippy beats and ethereal vocals. And a mad take on Can You Feel It on the flip. What’s not to like? There are still copies in Phonica and Piccadilly… Click here to listen.
