It's one of the curious vagaries of dance music--that the sound of a neartic bird could raise the temperature of a dancefloor. Think "Sueno Latino". "Pacific State". How the tremolo call of the common loon became a byword for the paradisiacal is explored at length by Philip Sherburne in a terrific piece of writing for Pitchfork. Loons are on the brain thanks to the record at hand, a welcome return to the dancefloor by Vancouver-based Dylan Khotin-Foote, alias Khotin.
A glittering slice of dream house is one thing, but with piano? And a loon wail? And the track is called "Tropique 707"? It's like that expanding brain meme. Guilty as charged. A "lost" track discovered a few years back on an ailing laptop, it's nice to see it get a vinyl release. "Rays Ways" is a lovely bit of woozy deepness with dubbed out pads recalling MRI's work on Force Tracks. Gorgeous. The EP is bookended by "Resobeat ('89 Mix)"--a lovely bit of drum machine house--and "Cyber_space", a blissed-out downtempo closer. Sweet.
