Ornaments is one of those special labels that put as much care into the physical release as they do the music itself; each marbled slab of vinyl a stunning objet in its own right. Deepness is the order of the day, whether it be sublime dub techno from Rhauder & Paul St. Hilaire or organic avant-house from Wareika--one of the records of 2023; subtly dubbed-out instrumental jams waxing and waning over over shuffling 4/4.
Now comes "2 Jahre Dazwischen" ("Two Years In-Between") from producer Lesterr; a generous six-tracker, one of the loveliest things we've heard this year. Deep, moody, impeccably produced electronic soul.
Opener "Verloren" ("Lost") has a melancholy vibe to match its title--wind tunnel string pads, piano, chunky stuttering UK garage-y beats. Closing out side A we get a lovely percussive remix from Isolée--always a welcome name to see--which ups the tempo and dubs out the piano. It's maximal and all-encompassing, a glorious treatment of its source material and a great reminder that the best music of the so-called "minimal" era was anything but.
The flip begins with a comedown--"Schwingung" ("Vibration")--digital waves crashing in a synthscape. "Zum Gluck" ("Fortunately") builds on that atmosphere for a two minutes, an uneasy melancholy so dark and black it recalls the void of Under the Skin. Percussion enters and builds to an uplifting D&B vibe with swelling pads--a stunning track. "Vorhang des Lichts" ("Curtain of Light") has more of those pads with garage beats and a disembodied vocal. The EP closes with "Traum" ("Dream") - twitchy beats, swelling, major key piano, a sense of finality and closure.
Lesterr's '2 Jahre Dazwischen' EP is release on Ornaments on 27.06.25 on vinyl and digital.
