Some people don’t really need an introduction. Marshall Jefferson was there at the beginning of it all. Can we take a minute to reflect on that legacy? ‘Move Your Body’, are there many records that convey the energy, emotion and visceral thrill of dancing more clearly? Probably not. A demand, a directive, a way…There have been so many re-ups of those classic records over the years and yet they still sound timeless in so many ways. So when a hitherto ‘lost’ recording by one of house music’s giants emerges from the vaults it’s always going to grab the attention.
Released on Utter, a label dedicated to bringing to the attention the more leftfield side of artists, Yellow meditation is a long form (24 minutes in its original version), well, meditation. Spoken word physical guidance for relaxation and reinvigoration. Sweeping synths and soft brushed drums accompany Marshall’s positive tones and he moves the listener through the body, feet to brain, leading the connection between the muscles and inner spirit. As a morning routine goes it’s worth rising a little earlier to make the time for.
The release comes with two additional new versions by Joakim. Vertical and Horizontal. They diverge the original’s ethos in opposing directions. Vertical toughens everything up repeating the process into something altogether more dancefloor orientated. It’s pretty pumping and would not be out of place in a dark room at 4am. Killer stuff.
Horizontal compresses the original into 9 minutes this time and is a beatless, verging on ambient take on the original, maybe a little darker in tone but doing something nicely different with the source material and keeping the legacy alive.
Put this on, check in and relax - and look out for the yellow smiley faces.
