In the haze of mid-July last year Dublin-based Niall Rogers took over the reins of Tom Cathcart's Last Resort show on NTS in the guise of Officer John. It's really a top mix, check it out below--a swirling amalgamation of shoegaze-y psych business, a bit of drone, and some sexy beats from his Paraflow project (love the bouncy FIO remix of "Continental Crust"). It was also a perfect context to hear the Officer John cuts for the first time. "Don’t be a prude." Right.
After a few Bandcamp teasers, Wah Wah Wino have put out "The Return of Officer John", collecting five originals with a stinger of a Morgan Buckley remix. If you dug last year's ddwy EP and the a.s.o. album from a few years back you'll want to cop this. Hazy melancholia. Shoegaze vibes. Heavy hip-hop drums, baggy guitars, reverbed vocals. And a brilliant sleeve to boot.
"Stay" is the standout for me--what an opener. Guitar fuzz, boom boom bap, bass, guitar, summer of love vocal. The Morgan Buckley remix is a filtered rewind, bringing percussion to the fore and stuttering the vocal. Crimson & Clover. "Pass" stitches together a catchy vocal couplet styling and sinewy guitar. "Handle" is a nice bit of mellowness. "Awake" is a trippy indie vibe with a vocal that recalls Panda Bear's tracked wall of sound. "You" is an lovely closer with some elegiac piano, a real weeper.
There is a looseness to these songs that could really work well live, and Officer John does have some dates coming up in Dublin and Bristol, check RA for details.
The Return of Officer John has been repressed and should be available in all good record shops.
Stateside In Sheep's Clothing have a few left.
