It’s always nice when a record that once resold online for $700 gets repressed. But it’s never nicer when it’s got the sort of sunbleached groove you can see heating up the dancefloor. And yes, ‘Under Cover Lover’ by Nassau singer and musician Stirling March is one of those records that ticks both of the above boxes.

Straight out of The Bahamas, ‘Under Cover Lover’ is a Caribbean Boogie deep cut from 1985 with a bounce that sits somewhere between Trinidadian calypso/soca songwriter Merchant’s disco classic ‘Instant Funk’ and Nigerian afro-boogie crooner Steve Monite’s still-burning floor filler ‘Only You’. Stirling, at the time deeply influenced by radio disco, soul and rock, wrote the song in a few hours, before recording it in a local studio, and releasing 1000 copies through sound engineer Peter Cartwright’s independent Illumination Records label. Sadly, despite his limited experience with, and understanding of, the Bahamian music industry, Stirling’s record never quite went to the next level, lost for several decades to the sands of time.

All of that said, when Kalita Records made contact with Stirling, they learned that after years spent working as a telecommunications technician, he became involved in the local gospel scene, within which he is now a full-time musician, and releases faith music for the Bahamian Christian community to enjoy.

Stirling March’s Under Cover Lover 12” will be released through Kalita Records this September (pre-order here).
