It makes sense that Miles J Paralysis should collaborate with The Rootsman (John Bolloten) on this, the third Crying Outcast release. They share a geographical and musical sensibility, pushing against the boundaries of genre whilst retaining its integrity and signifiers. The music of both artists is rooted in the North of England and has mystical undertones. The Rootsman’s seminal Third Eye Music label was an enormously prolific purveyor of sometimes experimental, increasingly spiritual dub, which was surely influential for Miles when setting up Crying Outcast and to his own musical journey. It’s interesting that Bolloten has also worked as a social documentary photographer, and Miles’ own work is littered with samples that serve as psychogeographical footnotes.

Crying Outcast has gathered three pieces of work from Bolloten's sprawling back catalogue including collaborations with Celtarabia and fellow avant-dub genius Russ (The Disciples), and added a contemporary reimagining from Miles himself.

'When the Eye Opens’ is deep, euphoric steppers with a haunting vocal sample. Whilst some steppers can be blistering and apocalyptic, this has a blissed-out, uplifting feel without sacrificing any of its power or bass pressure. Miles’ respectful remix brings it closer to house music’s tempo, with a pummelling bassline and cavernous dubbing. Rattling percussion brings us close to the same territory Fabi Paras was exploring in the nineties.

‘Dub of the Spirits’ (featuring Celtarabia) is a more experimental piece, heavy, chugging 4/4 beats, lethal hand drums and, of course, dubbing to infinity and beyond. ‘Loka Samasta Dub’ (recorded under the name Pachakuti with Russ of the Disciples) is heavier, stoned and more oppressive, operating in the same sphere as former Rootsman collaborator and much-missed cult hero Muslimgauze.

This release serves as a statement of intent by Crying Outcast and Miles J Paralysis, not to stay in one lane, of curiosity, and to make connections between the music of the past and the present. I can’t wait to hear what comes next.

Roots Return EP is released by Crying Outcast on March 27th.
