Can it really be nearly ten years since Tornado Wallace dropped his classic Lonely Planet LP on Running Back? For those just joining it still sounds incredible right off the opening--a palpable blast of humidity, tropical vibes, unease. A brilliant single anchored by an unforgettable vocal turn from Sui Zhen. Since then, the planet may have gotten lonelier but that's no fault of Lewie Day. There was a nice 12 on Basic Spirit, the label he did with the late Jamie Tiller. 2020 brought an underrated LP of wonky tribal business on Optimo. And if the press is to be believed, 2025's prog tour-de-force "Bitter Suite" (on, er Test Pressing) was the first record played at UNIVERS Ibiza--its slinky arpeggios echoing over a dancefloor permeated by the smell of chicken tendies, caviar, and Sauvage. At least that's how we imagine it.
So now he's returned with another 12" on Running Back and it's really nice.
Things get going with "Asahi Ga Yondeiru" ("the morning sun is calling") with a Japanese vocal from Courtney Bailey (check their recent 12 on Second Circle). A nice midtempo pumper propelled by synth stabs, glittering electronics, it does have that sunbreak vibe.
"Left At Sunset" is maybe one of the best things Lewie has done. Commencing with a skittering breakbeat, it's a lovely piece of music that would fit just as nicely in a sunset set, or bring a room of dancers to tears if dropped at the right moment. Heavenly vocals interplay with bell effects, crescendoing in waves, building steam. When the keys drop, it's devastating. Expect to hear this one all summer.
"Plasticine" is a nice bit of submarine dubby house. Whale calls, tropical noises, and flute skim over fat bass and skittering beats. Proper deepness!
