We've been following Peach since 2021's "Galaxy Girl" dropped on Shanti Celeste & Gramrcy's imprint. A playful, glistening collection of techy bangers, neon callipygous fruit floating in orbit. Brilliant. Since relocating to the UK and focussing on DJ gigs and production full time, we've seen three lovely EPs on her own Psychic Readings label, as well as one for Call Super & Parris. Soak Vol. 1 is her first record for Vancouver's essential Mood Hut. A respite from the dancefloor pumpers, we get five distinct moods in a downtempo mode, a bit of craft and wonkiness that gel with the Mood Hut vibe.
Right from the start you can practically see the steam coming evaporating off the wax. I've had the pleasure of living in this brilliant assemblage for the last few weeks. It's intricate, heady music, immaculately produced by Peach (with an assist from CZ Wang). Sampled heavy atmospherics, a drum tattoo over sleazy pads. 'Bathtime Bliss' indeed. Onsen territory. A few splashes, the rev of an engine (could it be a Jeepney??), 'Batangas Beat' is chonky AF, just a top moody vibe. 'Accidental Zoom' brings syncopated percussion, a telegraph pattern against a lush backdrop, and sampled voices adding a wonky hip-hop vibe. 'Rainy Season' drops out the beats for squelchy synths and chimes (I swear I can almost hear an iPhone ringtone) against ping-ponging light rhythms and sampled wetness; lush and humid. 'Christian's Song' closes things out with a slow electro vibe. Then entire EP is only around 22 minutes, but it's only volume 1. Essential.
