Robbie Shakespeare. Sly Dunbar. Wally Badarou. Mikey Chung. Uziah Thompson. Barry Reynolds. The Compass Point Studios house band is one of those unbelievable groupings of musical genius that pop up from time to time (see also the Wrecking Crew, the Funk Brothers). Various members of the crew collaborated over albums by artists as diverse as Grace Jones, Tom Tom Club, Black Uhuru, Joe Cocker, and, er, David Allen Coe. The sound is a kind of in-the-pocket reggae-infused funk. Slack, but somehow always on point. Crystal clear.
If you love those Grace Jones albums but are wondering where to go next, the answer is always Barry's 1982 solo outing on Island Records taking its title from Barry's version of Dan Hicks's classic tune (also brilliantly covered by Thomas Dolby). There are nice takes on some of the songs he wrote and produced for Marianne Faithfull ("Guilt", "Broken English") but the cut for me has always been "Till The Doctor Gets Back." A perfect reggae drenched funky groove. Long unavailable on streaming services, there appears to be an upload on Bandcamp now.
Joel Martin & Matt Edwards under their Quiet Village moniker have delivered a fat-bottomed and faithful rendition of Barry's banger. The synths get turned up, vocal reverbed out--it's a sizzler. The flip sees Mad Professor on remix duties--the dubbed out take we've always wanted. Lanky and hard. Fucking brilliant.
